Sporty Sunday

I’ve always been the athletic type.   Sport of choice is volleyball, a gay dude’s sport.  I gave up basketball in 5th grade after getting a concussion and being unconscious  for a couple of minutes.   I was a skinny kid and I went up against the biggest guy in our class trying to block his fast break lay up, we collided and the physics explains it all.

My interest in volleyball began in grade school, I found it as intensive as basketball even without the running back and forth and the contact with other players.  I didn’t make the team in grade school though.  In high school, I tried out for the team in my senior year and got me a starting six position.  I wasn’t that good back then though, can’t get a sure spike but my service was flawless.

The most I played in my life was in college.  Even without joining the team, I played during PE class and after PE class and even after classes.  Instead of the required 1 unit of PE, I took up about 6 units of volleyball which kept me on the court for the most of my sophomore to senior years.

Swimming.  Ok, I’m no swimmer but I know very well how to swim.  I never enjoyed swimming in laps but growing up near the ocean made me a great survival swimmer and free diver.  At the age of 10, I was going underwater to a maximum depth of 20 feet in one breath.  By the age of 13 I was down to 30 feet and at 14, 40 feet was my record.  Good enough for an amateur.

Anyways, today is Sunday here and  my girlfriend usually wants to engage in sporty activities.  Her choice of sport is tennis, for some reason I also know how to play that though not really good at it and with the skills of my girlfriend I doubt if I’ll improve.

She also is learning to swim so this afternoon I went with her to the pool and splashed around in the deep end (she stayed in the shallows).  After swimming, i headed to the grass court to play volleyball barefoot with some of my mates from the Volleyball Club in college.  Yeah, they did improve phenomenally since the time I was playing.  I on the other hand have lost my skill and I’m really out of shape.  Back in the day I could beat the crap out of all of them, today I was struggling to keep the ball in. I’m getting old.

Oh well, I might not be getting old, I’m just completely out of shape.
